Chomolhari Trek of Bhutan is one of the most famous high altitude treks of Bhutan. This trek is the perfect blend of culture and mountains, and you will get enough time to enjoy the mountain culture and get amazed by the spectacular Himalayan scenery. On a challenging eight day trek to the base of Bhutan’s most sacred mountain, Chomolhari, you will come across the nomadic yak herders. The trek begins and ends in Paro. Let’s get a detailed insight of the Chomolhari Trek.

Bhutan consists mostly of steep and high mountains crisscrossed by a network of swift rivers, which form deep valleys before draining into the Indian plains. This great geographical diversity combined with equally diverse climate conditions contributes to Bhutan's outstanding range of biodiversity and ecosystems.

The Chomolhari Trek is equivalent of the Everest base camp trek in Nepal, and is among the most popular trekking spot. The highlight of this trek is the impressive view of the Chomolhari Peak (7314m), from Jangothang, which is enroute to the base for Chomolhari peak climbing expeditions, and Jichu Drakye peak (6989m). The area with majestic mountain views, along with serene wilderness of the landscape makes it a popular tourist attraction.

Start your trip with a drive from Phuentsholing, covering beautiful scenery to Paro. The trek starts along the fertile Paro valley along the Paro Chu River and moves through the unspoilt villages into the beautiful valley. One can witness the ancient Tibetan Buddhist Culture, while climbing through the virgin forests before emerging to high summer pastures at the foot of magnificent and sacred Chomolhari peak.

The route crosses three high passes - Bhonte La (4890m), Takhung La (4520m) & Thombu La (4380m), before passing two lone Dzongs (forts). During the trek, one gets sufficient time for accommodation.

One factor that should be kept in mind is that one needs to be physically fit to enjoy the long trekking days here. Trekking here is physically demanding because of the distance and frequent changes in elevation. Most of the climbs run through deep forests on rocky trails and sometimes the trails traverses through wet mud where you need agility to hop between round river stones.

Best time to visit Spring (March to May) and autumn (September and October) are the best time for touring and trekking in Bhutan. Bhutan observes its biggest festivals during spring.
