Jakar is a small town in Bhutan sitting near the foot of the Chokhor valley. It remains a main trading centre here and thus, remains bustling with traders and buyers. The town is the site of Chakhar Lhakhang. It is believed that a roosting white bird indicated the proper and lucky location to set up a monastery around 1549. Thus, the settlement was named as Jakar, meaning "white bird”.
Jakar Dzong Jakar Dzong remains the most popular place of interest in this town. Blessed with a picturesque location, this Dzong looks unusual as its central tower is situated on an outside wall. Thus, visitors cannot walk around it.
Wangdichholing Palace The palace of Wangdichholing was constructed in 1857. It was raised on the site where a battle camp of the penlop of Trongsa, Jigme Namgyal was situated. Its edifice is imposing but neglected. Today, it is used as a lobdra (monastic school) but plans are being made to transform it into a museum. Here you can spot five giant water driven prayer wheels which make an interesting site.
Bumthang Brewery Bumthang Brewery is the only microbrewery of Bhutan. Here a small amount of beer is produced. It was laid almost two decade ago and German equipments are used here along with Indian barley and spring water to produce beer. You can enjoy guided tours through the Brewery to learn about beer making and taste the famous “Red Panda Beer”.
Lhodrak Kharchu Gonpa Lhodrakharchu Gonpa was established by Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche in 1984. The monastery lets you understand the Tibetan Culture more closely. Here you can see monks meditating and indulging in daily prayers. Many students also come here to learn the melodies of sacred rituals, dharma dances and ceremonial instruments. It is a great place for the devotees of art and music and bestows a sense of fulfilment.
How to Reach Paro International Airport is the only international airport serving Jakar. Take a flight from Paro to Bumthang lands at Bathpalathang Airport right in the town of Jakar. Jakar receives daily flights from Thimphu at 6:30 daily. Taxis are available in abundance from the towns of Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Gelephu and Phuentsholing to reach Jakar.
